Zeeman powers Gaels to win over Lancers

KINGSTON, Ont. (February 6, 2010) – Joren Zeeman of Cambridge, Ont., led Queen's in kills, aces and blocks while helping the men's volleyball defeat the Windsor Lancers 3-0 (28-26, 25-20, 32-30) on Friday evening at Queen's new Athletics & Recreation Centre (ARC).

Zeeman posted 28 points on 19 kills, seven aces and two blocks but contributions also came throughout the Gaels roster. Bryan Fautley of Oakville, Ont., had 11 kills and four digs while Michael Amoroso of Toronto tallied eight kills, and a block.

Setter Jackson Dakin of Courteany, B.C. led Queen's with 30 assits while Dan Rosenbaum of Hamilton had 16.

The Gaels took an early 8-1 lead in the first set, due largely to Zeeman's serving with four aces in the opening set. A late push by the Lancers threatened the Gaels lead as they drew the set out to a final score of 28-26 in Queen's favour.

The second set saw Queen's and the Lancers fight to establish a lead, but powerful hitting from Amoroso and Zeeman late in the match turned the tide for the Gaels to earn a 25-20 victory.

In the final set, the two teams engaged in a see-saw battle with both teams looking to earn the final two-point advantage. Strong serving from Zeeman in the final points helped the Gaels edge the Lancers 32-30 for the game.

Top players for the Lancers were Shane Byrne of LaSalle, Ont., and Josh Edwards of Seeley, Ont., who each had 17 points on, 11 and 10, kills respectively.

The win gives Queen's a 13-4 record and they remain in third place of the OUA behind McMaster and Western. The game also marks the Gaels final regular season home game.

The Gaels next game is against the University of Toronto Varsity Blues in Toronto on Sunday February 14.

NOTES: The men's volleyball team amassed a 4-2 record in the new ARC-Main Gym this season and a perfect 6-0 record in Bartlett… Overall Queen's is 12-2 in the ARC since the Main Gym opened on January 17 (including men's & women's basketball and men's & women's volleyball).
