Gaels shutout RMC 3-0 in oldest hockey rivalry

| By:
KINGSTON, Ont. (February 4, 2010) – Queen's Steele De Fazio of Georgetown, Ont., made 29 saves to earn his first career CIS shutout in a 3-0 victory over the Royal Military College (RMC) Paladins in the 24th annual Carr-Harris Challege Cup hockey game

The Gaels have captured the last three Carr-Harris Challenge Cup meetings in a game that commemorates what is considered the oldest hockey rivalry in the world. The two teams originally clashed in 1886 with Queen's winning 1-0.

De Fazio's shutout is the fourth in Carr-Harris Challenge Cup history. All four have been recorded by Queen's. Last year's goalie Brady Morrison recorded a shutout in a 1-0 Gaels victory over RMC. RMC have now gone 149 minutes without scoring a goal in the annual rivalry grudge match.

Kingston's Ben Munroe broke open the scoring at 14:45 of the second period after receiving a cross-ice pass in the slot from Payton Liske of Welland, Ont. The second-year defender roofed a shot over the shoulder goalie Andrew Flemming of Quispamsis, N.B.

Thirty-six seconds later, David Chubb of St. George's, Nfld., fired home his seventh of the season through the legs of Flemming to make the score 2-0. Both scores were scored on the powerplay with Kurt Matthewson of Carnduff, Sask, serving a double-minor for RMC.

Jeffery Johnstone of Etobicoke, Ont., rounded out the scoring with an empty net goal late in the third period.

Despite the score, Flemming was sharp in net turning away 31 shots in the loss for RMC. Queen's was 2 for 5 on the power-play while RMC went 0 for 6.

With the win, Queen's moves into a tie for fourth place in the OUA east division with the Carleton Ravens. Both teams have 29 points, but the Ravens have two games in hand. Queen's next home game is Wednesday, February 10 at the Kingston Memorial Centre against the Ryerson Rams.

NOTES: Queen's now holds a 15-7-2 advantage in Carr-Harris Challenge Cup games… Payton Liske was named the game's MVP for Queen's while Ken Morin of St. Prosper, Que., earned the same honour for RMC...The cup is named in honour of the Carr-Harris family which has had several members compete in the rivalry in the past and representing both schools... The entire Queen's women's hockey team were in attendance to help cheer on their male counterparts to victory... Announced attendance for the game was 674.
