Carleton nips Queen’s 47-40; Gaels open playoffs at home on Wednesday

KINGSTON, Ont. (February 13, 2010) – The Carleton Ravens topped the Queen's Gaels 47-40 in a defensive struggle Saturday evening at the Athletics & Recreation Centre (ARC) on campus at Queen's University.

The loss pushes Queen's record to 13-9 slotting them into third place of the OUA East and sets up a first round playoff game against the sixth place Toronto Varsity Blues (11-11) set for Wednesday, February 17 at the ARC - tipoff is scheduled for 6:00pm. Ryerson sunk Laurentian with a 64-59 win to claim second place in the OUA East Division while Toronto beat Laurentian 77-64 setting up the first round matchup between Queen's and Toronto. The Gaels finished with 26 points, just two behind the Ryerson Rams for second place.

Erin Skippon of Kelowna, B.C. tallied a game-high 13 points and nine rebounds in the loss for Queen's while Brittany Moore of Hannon, Ont., recorded 10 points.

Ines Jelic of London, Ont., led Carleton in scoring with 11 points while Jessica Resch of Ottawa was the top rebounder with eight. Carleton's Alyson Bush of Ottawa was the only other player to break into double-digit scoring with 10 points.

Carleton built a 14-8 lead after the opening quarter, but the Gaels battled to cut their lead to just two points late in the second. Carleton then went on a critical 8-0 run which included two key three pointers from Raven's guard Jennifer Stoqua of Ottawa to push the score to 30—20 at the half.

The Ravens would open a 12 point lead in the third quarter and Queen's would never bring the score closer than five the rest of the game to finish at 47-40.

NOTES: The Gaels lost both meetings against Carleton this season dropping a tight 64-62 decision in the nation's capital on January 22. Head Coach Dave Wilson paid tribute to three graduating players on Saturday – Erin Skippon (Kelowna, B.C.), Katie Guthrie (Orillia, Ont.), and Maddie Soye (Kitchener, Ont.).
