Gaels strike gold in women’s squash

Squash earns OUA women's title
WATERLOO, Ont. (February 13, 2010) – The Queen's women's squash team captured their second OUA championship banner in three seasons defeating the Western Mustangs 4-2 in the gold medal final. Queen's qualified for the gold medal game by dumping Toronto 5-1

The win marked the eighth time the women's team have captured an OUA squash banner and it was their first title since the 2007-08 season.

This year, the Gaels finished the regular season posting a 23-1 record. Four members of the women's team earned OUA all-star recognition including Erin Roberts of Calgary who claimed OUA Rookie of the Year honours. Other Queen's earning all-star nods were Heather Lamb (First-Team) of Calgary, Julia Dales (Second-Team) of Ottawa, and Caitlin Klein (Second Team) of Toronto.

The victory also marked the Gaels' third OUA championship title in the 2009-10 with all three coming at the hands of the Western Mustangs. On November 14, Queen's topped Western in the OUA men's rugby final while the in men's football, Queen's edged Western in the Yates Cup final.

In the men's competition, the Gaels were edged by McMaster in the OUA bronze medal game to finish fourth.  The final score was 3-3 but McMaster edged Queen's in games for the tiebreak. The Gaels lost their opening game 4-2 to McGill and Western topped McMaster 6-0 setting up the bronze medal match.

In the final, Western defeated McGill to claim their 27th consecutive OUA squash title.
