Mitch Leger's Olympic torch will be on display on Friday night as part of Olympic Night against Ottawa
KINGSTON, Ont. (February 11, 2010) – The Queen's Gaels basketball teams will be battling for playoff positioning this weekend when they take on the Ottawa Gee Gees and Carleton Ravens.
On Friday night, the Gaels welcome the Gee Gees to the Athletics & Recreation Centre (ARC) on Olympic Night. In honour of the Opening Ceremonies taking place in Vancouver, the Gaels are encouraging fans to wear red to show their support for Team Canada. Fans will also have the opportunity to see the torch that Gaels forward
Mitch Leger of Kingston, Ont., carried during the torch relay, and to sign a good luck banner for Canadian athletes that will be sent to Vancouver.
As for the game itself, both the women's and men's games should be hard-fought contests. The Gaels and Gee Gees are separated by just two points in the OUA East division on the women's side while the Queen's men will be looking to avenge a close loss to Gee Gees from their meeting in Ottawa. Two victories by the Gaels could go a long way in determining where they finish in the OUA East standings.
On Saturday night, the Gaels will take to the court against the division-leading Carleton Ravens. The Ravens come into the night ranked No. 3 and No. 9 in Canada in the men's and women's rankings respectively. Fans are encouraged to bring pots and pans to the game in order to make as much noise as possible and every fan that does, will receive a free t-shirt.
The Queen's women will be looking to
Brittany Moore of Hannon, Ont., and
Katie Guthrie of Orillia, Ont., to lead the attack as they try to take down Ottawa and Carleton. The veteran guards are leading the Gaels in scoring this season with Moore averaging 16.2 points per game and Guthrie averaging 13.3.
The Queen's men will be counting on Leger to continue his outstanding season that has him being mentioned in talk as to who will be the CIS Player of the Year. The fourth year forward is the only player in Canada who is averaging more than 20 points (22.0) and 10 rebounds per game (12.4). However, against two of the Top 10 teams in the country, the Gaels will also need to get strong performances from
Baris Ondul of Istanbul, Turkey, and
Dan Bannister of Newmarket, Ont.
Both nights will have the women's game tipping off at 6:00 pm while the men's games will go at 8:00 pm.
