KINGSTON, Ont. (November 6, 2010) – Led by Game MVP
Kelli Chamberlain of North Bay, Ont., the No. 1 Queen's Gaels women's soccer team defeated the McMaster Marauders 3-0 in the first semifinal of the OUA Final Four Tournament Saturday at Richardson Stadium.
The win advances Queen's to the OUA Championship game on Sunday afternoon and also secures the team a spot in the CIS Championship next weekend in Charlottetown, P.E.I.
The game started off well for Queen's with the striker duo of Jacqueline Tessier of Winnipeg, and Chamberlain creating numerous chances in the Marauders 18 yard box. After a couple of near misses, Chamberlain would finish off a great through ball from Tessier in the 31st minute to put Queen's on top. The goal was Chamberlain's 12th of the season.
Before the end of the half, the Marauders took over possession in the Gaels half thanks to some strong play from midfielder Cheryl Druchok of Palgrave, Ont. However, the Marauders were never able to create a strong scoring opportunity thanks to solid play from the Gaels back four.
With the game still up for grabs in the second half, the Gaels got a big goal from
Mary Kampman of Penticton, B.C. The midfielder found space at the top of the box and curled a shot past McMaster keeper Jocelyn Wilkins of London, Ont., to spot Queen's a two goal lead.
15 minutes later, with the Marauders pressing forward into the Gaels half, Chamberlain sent a ball through for Tessier who walked it around the keeper and easily found the back of the net for her 20th goal of the season to seal the win.
Queen's will play the No. 5 Laurier Golden Hawks in the OUA Championship at 1:30pm. The Golden Hawks advanced to the final after dumping the No. 6 Ottawa Gee Gees in the late semifinal game 2-1. Ottawa will face McMaster in the bronze medal game set for 11:00am. Both games will be played at Richardson Staduim and be broadcast live on www.ssncanaca.ca.
