Gaels drop five set heartbreaker to Western

KINGSTON, Ont. (November 27, 2010) The Queen's Gaels men's volleyball team dropped a five set heartbreaker 18-25, 25-20, 25-22, 24-26 and 7-15 to the Western Mustangs on Saturday afternoon at the Athletics and Recreation Centre (ARC) in Kingston, Ont.

Will Sidgwick of Toronto was Queen's top scorer recording 17 points on 17 kills. He also had seven digs in the loss. Overall, Queen's had five players break the 10 point barrier with Matthew Taylor of Toronto recording the Gaels' only double-double with 12 kills and 10 digs.

Bryan Fautley of Oakville, Ont., and Michael Amoroso of Toronto each posted 14 points in the loss while Taylor recorded 12 and Anthony Pitfield of Ottawa had 10. Setter Jackson Dakin of Courtenay, B.C., recorded 50 assists.

Garrett May of Scarborough, Ont., was Western's leading scorer with 21 points while teammate Matt Poulin of Shanty Bay, Ont., registered 20. May had a game high 19 kills, one ace and a block while Poulin tallied 15 kills, three aces and 2 blocks Reid Halpenny of Exeter, Ont., tallied 12 digs in the win to go along with 12 kills.

The Gaels held a 2-1 advantage before losing a momentum shifting 24-26 fourth set to the Mustangs. Queen's quickly rebounded with a 3-0 lead in the fifth set, but Western rallied to a 6-5 lead before shutting the door on critical block by Matt Waite of St. Thomas, Ont. From that point the Mustangs maintained control finishing out the final set 7-15.

With the win, the Mustangs sit atop the OUA standings with 18 points and a perfect 9-0 record. The Gaels slip to 7-2 and are tied with McMaster for second place with 14 points. McMaster plays York tonight at 7:00pm.

The Gaels aim to break their two game losing skid when they meet Windsor Lancers on Sunday afternoon at the ARC. Game time is set for 2:00pm.

NOTE: The Gaels were without the services of regulars Niko Rukavina of Mississauga, Ont., Joren Zeeman of Cambridge, Ont., and Dan Rosenbaum of Hamilton, Ont., who are sidelined with injuries.
