CHARLOTTETOWN (November 14, 2010) – The Queens Gaels captured the 2010 CIS Women's Soccer Championship in Charlottetown on Sunday edging the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks 1-0 on a
Riley Filion (Alexandria, Ont.) goal in overtime.
Filion, scored three minutes into the second frame (107th minute) of extra time to hand the Gaels their second national championship title and their first since 1988.
“The biggest goal of my life!” exclaimed Filion of the goal which was a 30 yard blast that hit the crossbar and deflected into the Laurier net off the keeper's back. “I was thinking get the technique right.”
Chantel Marson of London, Ont., was the Gaels keeper who recorded the championship shutout and made a game saving stop to prevent Laurier from tying the game late in overtime.
Queen's never allowed a goal throughout the tournament recording three straight shutouts.
Elena Corry of Hamilton notched the opening two shutouts for the Gaels, while Marson got the nod in the final.
The game was fast paced from the outset with almost all the play between the 18 yard boxes for most of the 1st half. Laurier had a brief flurry around the 43rd minute after a Queen's wall was effective in turning aside a 25 yard free kick.
Laurier carried the play in the 2nd half having a distinct territorial advantage for extended stretches. A determined Queens's backline denied Laurier's advances as few opportunities were being created by the ball possessing midfield of Laurier.
Marson's key save came with two minute remaining in overtime as she made a two handed diving stop going to her left to get in front of a headed ball off a free kick from outside the Queen's 18 yard box late in the extra frame.
“Our backline was great', said Queen's Head Coach
Dave McDowell. “We defended well, remained composed. Their midfield is very strong”
Filion was named to the Tournament All-Star Team along with teammates
Melissa Jung of Mississauga, Ont., and Kelli Chamberlan of North Bay, Ont.
The win overturn's last week's result when Laurier edged Queen's 1-0 in the OUA Championship. Both teams qualified for the CIS championship as a result of winning their way into the OUA final.
The Gaels were a perfect 3-0 at the CIS Championship with wins over Laurier as well as the University of Fraser Valley Cascades on Saturday and the Cape Breton Capers on Thursday.
Overall the Gaels finished with a 19-3 record and were the No. 1 ranked team in a Coaches Poll issued on Nov. 2.
