KINGSTON, Ont. (November 12, 2010) - Among 120 university and club teams from Canada and the U.S., Queen's Varsity Fencing participated in the 41st RMC Invitational, entering 6 "A" teams, 6 “B” teams, 3 “C” teams, and 3 “D” teams for a record high of 18 teams in total.
Out of all participating teams, Queen's took an overall standing of 3rd place just below the University of Toronto and RMC.
Despite an injury suffered mid-bout by OUA gold-medalist,
Scott Bowman, Men's Sabre (
François Beaucage-Gauvreau,
Scott Bowman, Greg Nonato,
Jacob Bryce) continued fighting forward with Bryce taking over for Bowman for the semi-finals, winning silver in the gold medal match.
Men's Épeé (
Jack Chen,
Karl Gardner,
Mario Gibney,
Danny Jang) made it to the bronze medal match, narrowly finishing in 4th place. Men's Foil (Craig ,
Dean Loubert, Chris Perez), placed 12th after elimination having ultimately been challenged by a team of competitive coaches.
The women's squad was led by the Women's Sabre team (
Kimberley Sakkal,
Safia Dhanji,
Jacqueline Loiselle, Kristina Enciso) who fought strongly to finish 6th, while women's Épeé (
Laura Bartha, Sarah Kim,
Janice Lao,
Nora Magyarody) finished 8th, and women's Foil (Faye Sun, Caitlin Chang, Sarah Patteron, Doris Li) placed 13th.
The
Brock Open individual tournament is scheduled to take place this following weekend on November 13-14, in St. Catharines at Brock University.
