KINGSTON, Ont. (October 8, 2010) –
Andrea Wadsworth of Toronto, recorded three tries en route to a 32-8 win over the Toronto Varsity Blues in OUA women's rugby action on Friday afternoon at Kingston Field.
The win pushed the Gaels record to a perfect 5-0 in their final regular season game. It also marks the first time since 2005 the Gaels have finished the regular season undefeated.
Jocelyn Poirier of Ottawa added two tries of her own, while
Samantha Trinier of Toronto posted one. Rachelle Kranenberg of Lucknow, Ont., recorded a convert.
Queen's exploded for 15 points in the opening half with Wadsworth securing the first 10 points on two tries. Poirier added a try in the 32nd minute to make the score 15-0. Toronto responded with a penalty goal by Lee-Anne Corrigan of Phelpston, Ont., to close the half 15-3 in favour of the Gaels.
Poirier and Wadsworth would post back-to-back tries in the second half with Kranenberg converting on Porier's try making the score 27-3. Corrigan would notch Toronto's only try in the 35th minute before Trinier closed the scoring at 32-8 in favour of Queeen's.
The Gaels had already clinched first place in the OUA Russell Division and will host an OUA Quarterfinal playoff game against either Toronto or Trent on October 16 at 3:00pm on Kingston Field.
Queen's will face Trent if they can get past York in tonight's matchup (7:00pm @ York) or if York wins the Gaels will battle Toronto with the Lions leapfrogging the Varsity Blues in the OUA Standings. Currently Toronto has eight points, York has five and Trent has two.
NOTES: The Queen's women's rugby program has secured undefeated regular seasons two other times since it started in 1994... The Gaels were a perfect 6-0 in 2005 and 4-0 in 2003.
