Kingston, ON. (October 23-24 2010) – Queen's Varsity Fencing hosted 336 athletes at the 25th
Queen's Open Invitational Fencing tournament in the ARC Upper Gymnasium this weekend. This is the second year the two-day event has been designated “Open,” entering a total of 57 Queen's fencers as evidence of the significant growth made in the competition's size and in the calibre of athletes,
François Beaucage-Gauvreau from Queen's headed off the first day of the Queen's Open by capturing Gold in Men's Sabre, followed by Jimmy Wintle and
Scott Bowman ranking 14th and 15th respectively.
Jack Chen made a personal best in Men's Épeé at 6th, with
Karl Gardner following in 10th, while rookie Anna Rogers ranked 11th in Women's Foil.
On the following day,
Christian Petrozza fought to place 6th in Men's Foil, with teammate
Christopher Perez at 11th.
Laura Bartha placed 10th for Women's Épeé, with rookie Sarah Kim and
Janice Lao following at 12th and 13th respectively, while
Safia Dhanji finished 13th in Women's Sabre.
Queen's Varsity Fencing received considerable praise from visiting teams for its coordination of the tournament due to the volunteers, comprised of Queen's Fencers, who had aided in facilitating its success, as well as having been hosted in the ARC on main campus for the very first time.
The RMC team tournament is scheduled to take place this following weekend on November 6-7 2010, at the RMC Anderson Field House.
