Guthrie stars in 68-58 win over Toronto

KINGSTON, Ont. (January 8, 2010) – Katie Guthrie of Orillia, Ont., tallied 23-points en route to helping the Queen's Gaels earn a 68-50 win over the University of Toronto Varsity Blues in OUA women's basketball action.

Guthrie's performance helped the Gaels secure their fourth straight regular season victory, moving their record to 7-4. Queen's is knotted up with Ryerson and Carleton for first place of the OUA east with 14 points. Carleton has a game in hand on both Ryerson and Queen's.

Queen's will challenge the Ryerson Rams tomorrow evening in what is expected to be an historic evening as the Gaels play their final game ever at the Bartlett Gymnasium where they have played since 1971.

Gutherie was sharp in the win against Toronto, making 7-of-9 free-throws and was 3-for-5 from behind the three point line. She tallied 32 minutes on the floor. Erin Skippon of Kelowna, B.C., recorded 14 points along with 10 rebounds while Brittany Moore of Hannon, Ont. scored 10. Moore now sits in fourth place in the CIS scoring race with 180. She is 37 behind Toronto's Nicki Schutz.

For Toronto, Schutz led the way with 16 points and was 6-for-18 from the floor. Erin McNeely of Kingston, Ont., recorded 10 points in the loss.

Tied at 26 apiece heading into halftime, the Gaels exploded for 26 points in the third to pull away from Toronto to claim the victory. Queen's took a 52-38 lead into the final quarter and never let the Blues come within 10 points of their lead to finish at 68-50.

Tomorrow, Queen's hosts Ryerson in the final game at Bartlett Gymnasium. Game time is scheduled for 6:00pm and it will be followed by a men's game at 8:00pm. Admission to the game is free and the team will 'cut the net' following the men's game as a symbolic farewell to its home gymnasium.

At the end of the month, the Gaels will play their first game its new home in the Main Gym of the Athletics & Recreation Centre (ARC) located in the new Queen's Centre on campus.
