KINGSTON, Ont. (January 8, 2010) – This Friday and Saturday night, the Queen's Gaels basketball teams will play the final games in Bartlett Gym as the take on the Toronto Varsity Blues tonight and the Ryerson Rams on Saturday.
In honour of the final game at Bartlett on Saturday, fans will receive free admission to the game with the donation of a canned good item. As well, there will be PEC t-shirt giveaways throughout the women's and men's games, as well as Physical Education Centre (PEC) trivia and speeches from the coaches following each game.
Finally, at the end of the men's game, the teams will cut down the nets of each basket to symbolize the move from the PEC to the new Athletics & Recreation Centre (ARC).
As for the games themselves, the women come into this weekend riding a three game winning streak which has vaulted them to the top of the standings in the OUA East Division. In their last contest on Tuesday night, the Gaels knocked off the RMC Paladins 57-42. The Gaels used a strong first half, in which they outscored the Paladins 27-12, to earn the victory.
Brittany Moore of Hannon, Ont., led the way for Queen's with 19 points while going 8 for 8 from the charity stripe.
Maddie Soye of Waterloo, Ont., also had a strong game for the Gaels with 10 points and 5 rebounds.
The men also enter this weekend's contests on a hot streak, having won their last two matchups to pull within a game of the .500 mark. On Tuesday night, Queen's easily handled the RMC Paladins 112-49 thanks to great games from
Baris Ondul of Istanbul, Turkey and
Ozren Opacic of Burlington, Ont.
Ondul was nearly perfect from the floor, hitting 90% of his shots, including going 8 for 9 from three point range. The fifth year guard finished the game with a season-high 26 points. Opacic, who was playing in his first game as a Gael, was simply dominant in his 16 minutes on the floor. The second year forward was 10 for 15 from the floor for 27 points. He also dished out 5 assists and collected 3 rebounds.
