KINGSTON, Ont. (January 29, 2010) –
Katie Guthrie of Orillia, Ont., scored on a layup with 25 second remaining to seal a come-from-behind 64-62 victory over the Laurentian Lady Vees in the opening women's basketball game in the Main Gym of the Queen's Athletics & Recreation Centre (ARC).
With the win, the Gaels hold sole possession of second place of the OUA East Division at 11-6 while the Vees fall into third place with a 10-7 record. The Carleton Ravens maintained their four-point lead on the Gaels with an easy 73-55 victory over the Toronto Varsity Blues, also on Friday.
Queen's only lead of the game came with Guthrie's layup in the final seconds. Laurentian opened up the scoring and surged to an 11-point lead early in the second quarter. The Vees would take a 36-29 lead into half, and an eight point lead into the final quarter with the score at 52-44.
Britanny Moore of Hannon, Ont. would tally 20-points on 33 minutes and was 4-for-9 from behind the three-point line. Moore now sits second in the country in three-point conversions and is fifth in the nation in scoring. First-year guard
Paige Robinson of Calgary posted a career high 12 points in the win. Her previous high was nine points against Laurier on Nov. 14.
Guthrie also posted double-digits with an 11-point performance while Queen's
Jill Wheat of Marwayne, Alta., was the game's top rebounder with 10.
Laurentian's Katie Goggins of Hanmer, Ont., was the game's top scorer, dropping 22-points and nine rebounds. Darrah Bumstead of New Hamburg, Ont., and Lisa Furchner of Sudbury, Ont., also posted double digit totals for the Vee's with 15 and 10 respectively.
In the final frame, the Gaels would over-come a 10-point deficit using a critical nine-point run to move the score to 54-53 with 6:51 to play. Laurentian would again build a five point lead scoring their last points with just 3:45 to play in the game. Queen's
Christine Wallace of North Gower, Ont., would tally three of her ten rebounds in those final minutes with Guthrie scoring four points including the tying and game winning layup.
NOTES: Laurentian had a 10 point lead or more 11 times in the game… The Gaels shot 32.4% compared to Laurentian's 46.7% from the floor… Lady Vees' Darrah Bumstead recorded the first basket at the newly opened Main Gym inside the Athletics & Recreation Centre at Queen's. She converted a layup, 20-seconds into the game.
Brittany Moore scored the Gaels first point in their new home with a three pointer almost a minute later at 8:56...
Queen's was playing without fourth-year vetran Erin Skippon of Kelowna, B.C. who out of the line-up with the flu.
