KINGSTON, Ont. (September 27, 2009) – Playing in wet and rainy conditions, the Queen's Women's soccer team (5-1-1) earned an 8-0 victory over the visiting Trent Excalibur (1-7-1) on Sunday afternoon at Richardson Stadium.

The win was highlighted by a three goal outburst from the Gaels in a span of five minutes in the first half which quickly put the game out of reach.

With possession almost entirely favouring Coach McDowell's squad in the opening twenty minutes, the Gaels took full advantage of their early pressure. Renee MacLellan of Kingston, Ont., opened the scoring in the 14th minute and Jennifer Hutchinson of St. John's, Nfld., added to the lead three minutes later.

Before the Excalibur could recover, Angela Sullivan of Scarborough, Ont., made it 3-0 with her second goal in as many games in the 19th minute.

Queen's continued to apply pressure throughout the first half and managed to find the back of the net again in the 41st minute. Off some hard work by forward Kelli Chamberlain of North Bay, Ont., the ball found its way to Riley Filion of Alexandria, Ont. who made no mistake to increase the Gaels lead to four.

In the second half, the Excalibur tried to turn the tide and were able to generate a couple of scoring opportunities off corners. However, the Gaels defence held strong and prevented any quality shots on goalkeeper Elena Corry of Hamilton, Ont.

From there on out, the Gaels took control of the game once again, putting four more goals on the scoreboard. Jacqueline Tessier of Winnipeg, Lisa Bache of Burlington, Ont., and Rebecca Gibbons of Ottawa, and Mikyla Kay of West Vancouver, B.C., all found the back of the net. For Bache and Kay, it was the first goals of their CIS career.

Corry, who was not tested very often by the Trent forwards, picked up her second victory and second shutout of the season.

The women will be on the road this week as they travel to Ottawa to battle the Gee Gees on Wednesday night. Game time is scheduled for 7:00 pm.
