Byers records two hat tricks as Gaels go 1-2 in weekend action

| By:
TORONTO (September 27, 2009) – Jacqueline Byers of Mississauga, Ont., recorded two hat tricks on the weekend as the Gaels went 1-2 against some of the toughest competition in the OUA.

The Gaels first game of the weekend on Saturday was against the defending OUA champions, the Laurier Golden Hawks. Byers showed she was a serious offensive threat by scoring three goals, as well as having three assists. Lisa McLaughlin of Whitby, Ont., also contributed a hat trick game as the Gaels knocked off the team that has defeated them in the last four OUA Championships 11-7.

Queen's played the Western Mustangs early Sunday morning hoping to maintain the momentum from Saturday's win. Byers once again netted three goals, and contributed one assist. First-year player Marsha Cryderman of Bowmanville, Ont., also showed that she has quickly adapted to the university level of play with a hat trick, and had six goals by the end of the weekend. Even with these strong offensive contributions, the Gaels lost 13-9.

The team's final game of the weekend was against the University of Toronto Varsity Blues. This game was closely matched, with McLaughlin scoring another three goals to add to her weekend total. Unfortunately, the Gaels could not contain Toronto's Yoko Murphy who snuck 4 goals into the Gael's nets. This led to a close 14-12 loss, and left the Gaels with only one victory to show for their efforts.

The Women's Lacrosse team plays again on Saturday October 3rd in Montreal where they will play the McGill Martlets and the University of Guelph Gryphons.
