KINGSTON, Ont. (November 21, 2009) – The Queen's Gaels men's hockey team gave up four goals in the third period as they lost 6-3 to the Windsor Lancers on Saturday afternoon at the Memorial Centre.
The loss drops the Gaels record to 5-6-1 on the season as they lose both games of their weekend doubleheader with the Lancers. Meanwhile, Windsor improves to 5-6-2.
After losing in a high-scoring affair on Friday night, the Gaels were looking to come out and play a strong opening 20 minutes.
Jeffrey Johnstone of Etobicoke, Ont., got Queen's on the board midway through the frame as he beat Lancer goalie Jim Watt.
Scott Gillis would tie the game up for Windsor but 49 seconds later, Johnstone restored the Gaels lead.
Jordan Mirwaldt of Winnipeg, Man., and
Payton Liske of Welland, Ont., each picked up their second assists of the game on the goal.
The lead would be short-lived as the teams started the second period as Mark Thorburn scored his first of three goals in the game just 59 seconds into the period.
Even though the game was tied, the Gaels continued to control play, firing 17 shots at Watt in the frame. They would finally be rewarded at the 16:12 mark of the second when
Joey Derochie of Sudbury, Ont., scored on the powerplay to give Queen's a 3-2 lead after two.
The Lancers began to pick up their play in the third period and evened the score at three when Mike Barbour beat Queen's goalie
Mackenzie Ball of Shannonville, Ont., for his second of the year.
The difference in the game came with less than six minutes remaining in the game. Thorburn and Ryan Federman scored a minute and 15 seconds apart to chase Ball from the nets and give Windsor a 5-3 lead. Thorburn would complete the hat-trick with an empty-net goal with only one second remaining on the clock.
Ball would turn aside 31 shots in the game while Watt earned his second straight win by making 40 saves for the Lancers.
Queen's will be back in action next Friday when they host the Ottawa Gee Gees at the Memorial Centre. Game time is scheduled for 7:30 pm.
