MONTREAL (October 31, 2009) –
Joey Derochie of Sudbury, Ont., scored his first hat-trick of the season as the Queen's Gaels doubled the Concordia Stingers 6-3 in OUA men's hockey on Saturday afternoon.
Queen's evened its record to 3-3-0 while Concordia remains winless with a 0-8-0 record. The Gaels are in seventh place of the Eastern Conference with six points and Concordia is in last place with no points.
Jordan Mirwaldt of Winnipeg scored once and added two assists while Jeffery Johnston of Etobicoke, Ont., had three assists to lead the Gaels with three points each.
Payton Liske of Wellend, Ont., scored the remaining goal for the Gaels.
Queen's built a 3-0 lead before the Stingers would beat Queen's goalie McKenzie Ball at 11:41 of the second period. The two teams would exchanged goals before Delrochie made the score 5-2, netting his third goal of the game on the power play at 1:02 of the third period. Liske added an insurance marker for Queen's at 7:27.
Concordia's Emilie Bouchard would close the scoring at 6-3 beating Ball at 12:26 in the final frame.
Ball, a Shannonville, Ont., native, made 29 saves on 32 shots picking up his third win of the season. Concordia's goalie Maxime Joyal (Montreal) made 35 saves on 41 shots.
Queen's held the advantage on the power play converting on two of its nine chances while Concordia was one-for-nine. In all, Concordia had 44 minutes in penalties while Queen's tallied 34 minutes.
The Gaels will continue their tour of Quebec next week when they face UQTR on November 6 in Trois Rivieres, Que. The game is set for 7:00pm.
