KINGSTON, Ont. (October 24, 2009) - Joey Derochie of Sudbury, Ont., had four points while Mackenzie Ball of Shannonville, Ont., made 30 saves as the Queen's men's hockey team defeated the Carleton Ravens 5-3 on Saturday afternoon.

The win helped the Gaels (2-2-0) snap a two game losing streak while the Ravens (4-2-0) dropped their second game in three outings.

The opening frame saw the Ravens jump out to a 2-0 lead before the game was five minutes old. Derochie would notch his first of the contest to pull Queen's to within a goal before Jared Cipparone restored the two goal lead for Carleton.

Despite the deficit, the Gaels continued to battle and were rewarded when Robert Stellick of Mississauga, Ont., scored his first CIS goal on the powerplay to make it 3-2 after one period of play.

With momentum on their side, the Gaels slowly began to take control of the game away from Carleton. Midway through the second period, Derochie would notch his second marker of the game, evening the score at three.

After Queen's evened the score, the Ravens began to respond with numerous offensive opportunities in the Gaels zone but Ball was up to the task, making a couple of excellent glove saves to keep the score tied heading into the final period.

Just 28 seconds into the third, captain Jonathon Lawrance of Steinbach, Man. scored a powerplay goal to give Queen's their first lead of the game. Two minutes later, David Chubb of St. George's, Nfld., scored a beautiful goal when he split two Ravens defenders and roofed the puck past Carleton goalie Alexander Archibald. The goal would spell the end of Archibald's night and put the Gaels up by two.

Queen's would face one more test as Chubb was given a five minute major penalty midway through the period but the Gaels penalty killing unit held strong and kept the Ravens off the scoresheet. Queen's would shutdown Carleton for the rest of the period to skate away with the 5-3 win.

Aside from Derochie's four point effort, three other Gaels recorded multiple-point games, including Chubb (3), Jeffrey Johnstone of Etobicoke, Ont., (3) and Jordan Mirwaldt of Winnipeg, Man. (2).

The Gaels now head out on their longest road trip of the season that will see them play away from the Memorial Centre for three straight weekends. Queen's opens the road trip on Friday when they travel to Montreal to take on the McGill Redmen.
