Gaels swept by Laurentian

| By:

Kingston, Ont. (September 21, 2008) - The Gaels (2-3-2) were downed by Laurentian in both men's and women's soccer Sunday afternoon each falling 1-0.

In the men's game, the Gaels could not score on Laurentian goalie Scott Cliff of Sudbury, Ont. who recorded the shutout.   Mid-way through the game, Queen's did challenge Cliff, when Andrew Nador of Kingston, Ont. tossed a throw-in straight into the net.  The goal was disallowed because rules state a goal cannot be scored directly off a throw-in from the corner.

Laurentian scored their lone goal when Gaels goaltender Tyler Lewis of Maple Ridge, B.C. came out to attack the ball and was upended allowing Davor Alisic of Charlottetown, PEI to score.

In the second half Lewis came up with a brilliant penalty kick save as Queen's was called for a hand pass in the goal crease.  Lewis tipped the ball just enough for it to ring off the cross bar to keep his team just one goal behind.

Queen's record now sits at 2-3-2 while Laurentian improves to 4-2-1.

On the women's side, Queen's lost a chance to move ahead of Laurentian in the standings as the Gaels fell 1-0.  Queen's struggled in the first half and could not rebound after an early goal by Lisa Watson of Newmarket, Ont. in the 16th minute.

In the second half, Queen's returned to the field with more jump than in the first, but still could not solve Vee's net-minder Meghan Hoffber of Brampton, Ont.   Hoffber now has two shutouts on the season.

Queen's is now tied with Laurentian with 12 points in the OUA East Division.  Queen's record sits at 4-3-0 while Laurentian has a record of 4-2-0.

Both the men's and women's team will be in action on Wednesday, September 24 as the host the Carleton Ravens.  For the men's squad it will be a test with the Ravens (6-0-0) having not lost a game this season.  It also marks a rematch of the OUA Final Four bronze medal game which saw Queen's win 2-1 in Ottawa.
