Morrison holds firm in shootout win for Gaels

Kingston, Ont. (November 14, 2008) – Brady Morrison of Thamesville, Ont. made 36 saves and an additional eight in the shootout win as the Queen's Gaels edged the Ottawa Gee-Gees 2-1 on Friday.

Brandon Perry of Timmins, Ont. was the lone goal scorer in the shootout for both sides as the Gaels picked up their fifth win of the season evening their record to 5-5-2 on the season. The victory moves Queen's two points ahead of Toronto who lost to UQTR on Friday. Ottawa's record moves to 5-4-1.

Morrison, a second-year economics major collected his fourth win of the year making several key saves including all eight shots faced in the shootout.

Clinton McCullough of Aurora, Ont. opened the scoring at 7:47 of the second period netting an unassisted wrap around goal for his sixth of the 2008-09 campaign. Ottawa evened the score seven minutes later when Matthieu Methot of Gloucester, Ont. converted to make the score 1-1.

The two teams were mainly even the rest of the night with Ottawa narrowly taking the shot advantage 37-36. The overtime decided nothing leaving the shootout to declare winner. Both Ottawa and Queen's would be unsuccessful until Perry's decided goal.

Tomorrow the Gaels will face fierce rival McGill in a rematch last week's game in Montreal. The Gaels were downed 4-1 by the Redmen, but were playing with a shortened bench. The Queen's-McGill rivalry is the fourth oldest hockey rivalry in the world and is commonly referred to as the “Kill McGill” game by the Queen's student body.

NOTES: Queen's has owned Ottawa in the first period this season outshooting the Gee-Gees 35-19 in the two meetings thus far… The Gaels were without assistant coach Alyn McCauley who was being honoured for his play with the Ottawa 67's. The former NHLer and OHL star had his jersey retired this evening by the 67's.
