Morrison plays the puck in 3-0 loss

York spoils home opener

| By:
Kingston, Ont. ( October 10, 2008)- In what was suppose to be a night of celebration as Queen's opened the doors once again at the historic Memorial Centre in Kingston, Ont. However the York Lions spoiled the home opener as they defeated the Gaels 3-0 Friday evening.

Power plays were the deciding factor in the contest as York were able to find the back of the net twice with the man advantage while Queen's went 0-13 for the game.

Scott Restoule of Sudbury, Ont.opened the scoring for York just 1:12 into the first period. The goal came just nine seconds into the Lions first power play and put the Gaels back on their heels.

York would capitalize early in the second on another power play as Daniel Torres of Markham, Ont. York where able to score both goals in 41 seconds with man advantage.

Queen's thought they had scored just minutes later as Clinton Mccullough of Aurora, Ont. broke into the zone and put the puck past Carlo Di Renzo of Woodbridge, Ont. The red light went on but the referee called the goal back as it was unclear if the puck crossed the line after it hit the post. The play did resolve in a power play for the Gaels as York was given a tripping penalty.

This was the start of a long second period for the Lions as they visited the penalty box 12 times in the second period. Queen's however could not capitalize on the man advantage which frustrated the Gaels.

The third period started well for the Gaels getting shot after shot on the York net but could not beat Di Renzo. York stayed out of the penalty box in the third and was able to hold the Gaels off. Jesse Grespan of Toronto,Ont. added an empty net with just five seconds left to finish the Gaels off.

Queen's is now winless on the season after two games and have not scored in either. The Gaels will look to score their first goal of the season and get their first win of the season tomorrow afternoon as they will host the University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT). Puck drop is set for 2:30 pm.

Note: Tomorrow's game is also FREE admission as the Gaels commemorate their new home at the Memorial Centre.
