Gaels fall to Trent in OUA Quarter Final 20-12

| By:
Peterborough, Ont. (October 10, 2008) – It ended how it started. The Queen's women's rugby season came to an abrupt end as the Gaels fell 20-12 to the Trent Excalibur on Friday evening during the Ontario University Athletics (OUA) quarter final game.

In early September, Queen's opened the season with a narrow 18-15 loss also against Trent in Peterborough, Ont.

Queen's posted an early 12-3 lead with tries coming from Julie Englehardt of Gatineau, Que. and women's basketball import Teddi Fermi of Kitchener, Ont. Emily Stern of Toronto posted both converts for the Gaels.

The Excalibur then exploded for three tries with Kaitlin Newton of Port Hope, Ont., Jessica Cormier of Dunnville, Ont. and Lauren Wizowski of Lindsay, Ont. scoring for Trent to seal the victory 20-12

“We played really hard, but we relaxed a little bit and that let them back into the game,” said Head Coach Beth Barz. “It's unfortunate way to end the season, but we had several season ending injuries and were missing a lot of starters from this game, it's not an excuse, but we played them hard despite the circumstances.”

The Gaels lost their opening game to Trent and then posted back-to-back home wins against York and Toronto. Queen's then ended the season losing their next two against McMaster and Guelph. Guelph was the top team in the Russell division posting a perfect 5-0 record. Trent was second at 3-2 and Queen's was third at 2-3. On a high note the Gaels did post a perfect home record at Kingston Field in 2008
