KINGSTON, Ont. (April 18, 2016) - Queen's women's basketball head coach
Dave Wilson is pleased to announce that
Veronika Lavergne (Ottawa) has signed her letter of intent to play basketball at Queen's for the 2016-17 season.
"I am very pleased to welcome a player of Veronika's talent and character to our program. There is a reason she was sought after by most teams in the country and many south of the border: she brings a genuine passion for the game, complete with the work ethic and skills to make her a dominant player in the CIS. At 6'4, she has a soft touch around the hoop, and with a 6'6 wingspan, she is, not surprisingly, pretty dominant on the boards as well. Our coaching staff is very much looking forward to working with Veronika to help her achieve her goals of a National Championship (or many) and a professional career beyond her university days."
Lavergne is an Ottawa native who comes to Queen's from the University at Albany Great Danes, a NCAA Division 1 program. Under the CIS repatriation rule, she will be eligible to compete with the Gaels this Fall and will be pursuing Arts & Science at Queen's.
Laverge attended St. Peter's CHS in Ottawa before joining the Great Danes and was a member of the Ottawa Nationals in the JUEL of Ontario league. At St. Peter's CHS she was named Senior Girls Basketball MVP. In 2014, Lavergne was a member of Team Ontario U17 squad and was chosen as an alternate for the 2013 team.
"I chose Queen's University because I trust the coaches and know that they will help me develop, not only as an athlete but also as a student and a leader. I love that Queen's is such an academic school and will challenge me and that it is a good distance away from my home (Ottawa). Plus my new teammates are great people and I can't wait to get to know them as well as compete for championships with them."
Lavergne will join
Emma Ritcey (Orillia, Ont.) and
Bridget Mulholland (Kingston, Ont.) for the 2016-17 season as the Gaels announced Mulholland's commitment in the Fall and Ritcey's in the Winter. Read about Mulholland
