The 2008-09 season was full of outstanding performances and Queen’s Athletics & Recreation along with the Queen’s Journal has compiled a list of 40 moments that stood out. From this list the Queen’s Journal selected 10 moments and asked the fans to vote on their favourite.

08/27/2008 – The Evolution of Q: Queen’s Athletics and Recreation unveils new logo, uniforms during a fashion style brand launch at the Ambassador Hotel in Kingston, Ont. Queen’s also announces a multi-year partnership with adidas Canada making Queen’s the first Canadian school to work with adidas under their new team apparel line.

08/28/2008 – Oh Canada: #Patrick Forbes# of Toronto represents Canada at the FISU World University Golf .Championship He finished tied for 25th individually helping Canada to a seventh place finish.

08/30/2008 – Big Win: #Mitch Leger# of Kingston, Ont. posts 28 points to defeat South Alabama Jaguars (NCAA Division-I) 102-94 during preseason play in Ottawa. In all five players would score double digits in the triple overtime thriller.

09/27/2008 – Tindall Field Opens: Several hundred alumni, staff, faculty along with friends of Queen’s and their families witnessed the long-awaited re-dedication of Tindall Field. Named for legendary Queen’s coach Frank Tindall, the state-of-the-art artificial field will extend the playing season for Queen’s and Kingston community athletes.

10/03/2008 – www.gogaelsgo.com: A new home on the web for Queen’s Athletics and Recreation is launched! Up to date information for all Gaels fans with a user friendly and graphic interface.

10/05/2008 – Dominate Weekend: Gaels squads across multiple sports dominate opponents registering significant victories over a two day period (October 4 & 5) - Rugby (M) vs. Trent 106-0; Football vs. York 80-0; Soccer (M) vs. RMC 5-0; Hockey (W) vs. Western 4-0.

10/05/2008 – Rugby for a Cure: Rugby (M) raises a record $21,431 for breast cancer research during the CIBC Run For the Cure event in Kingston. Approximately 128 players took part in the event brining the team’s total to just over $100,000 raised since 1999. Women’s basketball and rugby teams also took part this season adding to the cause.

10/07/2008 – Good Morning Athletes!: Queen’s hosts the first-ever athletes breakfast complete with staff members from Athletics and Recreation thanking athletes and serving a healthy pre-class meal.

10/11/2008 – Football History: #Mike Giffin# of Kingston, Ont., becomes Queen’s all-time leading rusher while Dan Brannagan of Burlington, Ont., becomes the school’s leading passer in a regular season football game against Ottawa.
10/18/2008 – Undefeated: Football and Rugby (M) both finish their regular seasons undefeated. Football marches to a perfect 8-0 while Rugby posts a 5-0-1 record.

10/18/2008 – Home Field Advantage: Field Hockey (W) hosted its first event on campus since 2003 seeing three games played over a two-day stretch on the new Tindall Field. “It was a different atmosphere, it was exciting and great to have our fans onside” – said third year player Emily Newton of Vancouver.

10/22/2008 – Shutout: Soccer ‘s (W) #Katie McKenna# of Oakville, Ont. collects her eight shutout of the season which ranks her tied with the most in Canada for the season.

10/25/2008 – Perfect Hosts: Cross Country (M/W) hosts the OUA Cross Country Championship with the Guelph Gryphons claiming the overall men’s and women’s title. Queen’s finished sixth with #Leah Larocque# of Ottawa placing as the top Gael in 12th place of the women’s race.

10/25/2008 – Champions: Rowing (M/W) captures Queen’s only banners of the 2008 Fall Term taking both the men’s and women’s banners. For the women’s team it marked their second in two seasons. One week later on November 3, Queen’s would finish second (women) and third (men) at Canadian University Rowing Championship.

10/26/2008 – Silver Medal: Lacrosse (W) captures its fourth consecutive silver medal finish at the OUA Championship. The Gaels finished with a record of 9-3 and 18 points second to only Laurier who had 24 points.

11/08/2008 – Silver Medal: Rugby (M) claims a second place finish at the OUA Rugby Championship. Despite a loss in the finals to McMaster, the Gaels post one of the most memorable rugby seasons since 2001 going 5-0-1 dominating opponents offensively.

11/11/2008 - Shining Student-Athletes: Queen’s sees 171 student-athletes honoured as Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) Academic All-Canadians and Ontario University Athletic (OUA) Academic All-Stars for the 2007-08 season.

11/21/2008 – National Honours for Football : Head Coach #Pat Sheahan# and Linebacker #Thaine Carter# (Nanaimo, B.C.) are recognized nationally for their season. Sheahan is named Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) coach of the year in football, while Carter is the recipient of the CIS Presidents’ Trophy for top defensive player in the country just a day earlier.

11/22/2008 – Ho Ho Ho!: Queen’s Athletics and Recreation participates in the Kingston Santa Claus Parade. Queen’s Football acts as Grand Marshalls while other athletes spread holiday cheer on the award winning Athletics and Recreation float (best new entry).


11/29/2008 – Upset weekend: Basketball (M) and Hockey (M) upset nationally ranked opponents back-to-back nights. Hockey (M) defeats No. 2 UQTR 2-1 in overtime at the Kingston Memorial Centre on November 28 while Basketball (M) secures a 61-59 win against No. 5 Windsor a day later inside Bartlett Gymnasium.

11/29/2008 – Silver @ Canadians: Despite key injuries, Queen’s captures a silver medal at the 2008 PCA Canadian University Cheerleading Championship in Brampton, Ont. Western claimed the overall title.

12/03/2008 – Athlete of the Week: #Becky Conroy# – Hockey (W); #Brady Morrison# – Hockey (M); #Dee Sterling# Football(M); and #Jackie Byers# Lacrosse (W) earn OUA Athlete of the Week honours during the fall semester. Conroy is the only athlete who is chosen as a CIS Athlete of the Week.

1/7/2009- Moore scores 40: #Brittany Moore#- Basketball (W); made Queen’s history scoring 40 points in a single game against the Royal Military College. Moore broke former Gael and current assistant coach Claire Meadows’ old regular season record by three-points. Meadows had scored 39 against Windsor in November 2006. Moore was nine points shy of tying the OUA single game mark (49) held by Candi Lohr (Brock) in 1982-83.

1/11/2009 – Seven in a Row: After knocking off the No. 3 nationally ranked McMaster Marauders just one night ago, the Gaels defeated the Guelph Gryphons for the seventh win in a row. Along the way Queen’s dumped York, Laurier, Waterloo, and RMC.

1/12/2009- 10 Medals: Queen's Track & Field captured10 medals at the Cornell University Southern Tier Univgiate Open. Overall the Gaels secured two gold, six silver and two bronze at an early season competition.

1/19/2009 – Now entering the ring: Wrestling hosted the 2009 Queen’s Open. Over ten different universities and clubs competed in the one day even which saw the University of Saskatchewan and the University of New Brunswick take the crowns.

1/19/2009- Queen’s Strides into season: The Queen’s men’s and women’s Nordic Skiing team travelled to North Bay, Ont. and competed in the first OUA race of the season in conjunction with an Ontario Cup race. Queen’s competed with university and non-university students.

1/24/2009 – Crazy Ending: Queen’s women’s basketball edged the Carleton Ravens 53-52 on a last second lay-up by #Brittany Moore#.Moore’s basket was part of a bizarre sequence of events in the closing seconds. Moore shot three foul shots with Carleton not contesting them and sunk the winning lay-up after.

2/2/2009- Queen’s Qualifies: All six men’s and women’s fencing squads qualified for the OUA Championships in the team relay events with four teams taking home the silver at the qualifications.

2/3/2009 – Captain Burke: In his first night as interim captain, #Billy Burke# of Aurora, Ont., scored twice including the overtime winner as Queen’s defeated the Carleton Ravens 3-2. Burke scored six goals in three games after playing the first 21 games with just three. His efforts gave the men’s hockey team a 6-0-1 record to finish the season.

2/14/2009- Oh so close!: Women’s volleyball used everything they had pushing York in a lengthy two-and-a-half hour marathon eventually falling to the No.1 seed in the OUA Quarterfinals.

2/19/2009 – Silver medal: Queen’s figure skating captured the silver medal at the 2008-09 OUA championship. It was one place better from their bronze medal performance last season.

2/19/2009- Silver Again: Men’s volleyball team collected a second consecutive silver medal as they competed against the McMaster Marauders for the third straight season in the finals.

2/21/2009- Hockey Day in Canada:  Queen’s University and Royal Military College (RMC) were featured during a national television segment on CBC’s Hockey Day in Canada on Saturday. The three-minute segment highlighted the hockey rivalry between the two schools in particular the Carr-Harris Cup which was played on February 6.

2/26/2009- China Bound: #Alexandre Dumond# of Ottawa competed at the 24th Winter Universiade conducted by the International University Sport Federation (FISU). Dumond, a kinesiology student at Queen’s University, is part of the biathlon contingent representing Canada at the international university competition. The biathlon races were held at Maoershanin Ski Resort in Harbin, China.

2/27/2009 – All- Canadian: Volleyball’s #Joren Zeeman# joins fellow Gaels; Football’s #Mike Giffin# (Kingston, Ont.) #Scott Valberg# (Kingston, Ont.), #Dee Sterling# (Kingston, Ont.), #Osie Ukwuoma# (Mississauga, Ont.) #Thaine Carter# (Nanaimo, B.C.), #Jimmy Allin# (Bellville, Ont.), #Danny Brannagan# (Burlington, Ont.) #Vince DeCivita# (Toronto) along with women’s rugby player #Jocelyn Poirier# (Ottawa) as CIS All-Canadians in their respective sports.

2/28/2009- Silver at OUA’S: #Leslie Sexton# and the men’s 4x400 metre relay team (captured silver medals at the OUA Championship and advance to the CIS championship.

3/3/2009- Morra leads Gaels to Semifinals: #Amanda Morra# of Pickering Ont., had a hat-trick as the Queen’s women’s hockey team defeated the No.9 nationally ranked Toronto Varsity Blues 4-2 in the OUA quarter-finals and advanced to the OUA semifinal best of three series against Laurier.

3/8/2009- CFL Camp: Five Queen’s student-athletes were among 50 football players invited to the Canadian Football League’s (CFL) Evaluation Camp held March 6-8 in Toronto. Notable performances; #Dee Sterling# - Tied 1st - Most Bench Press Repetitions (23), #Jimmy Allin# - Tied 3rd - vertical (37''), #Jimmy Allin# - 1st - Shuttle (3.97 seconds) a new record at CFL9 Evaluation Camp.

3/11/200:  Hey now you’re an All-Star: In all, 54 Queen’s student-athletes from 19 sports are named First or Second Team OUA All-Stars during the fall term.
