A perfectly placed onside kick coming out of half time started a dominant third quarter for Queen's Football that led to their 41-20 win over the Ottawa Gee-Gees Saturday afternoon in the Alumni Friends and Family Game at Richardson Stadium.
Queen's trailed the Gee-Gees 20-14 at half time before outscoring their opponents 21-0 in the third quarter, on their way to the 21-point victory.
The onside kick was one of several outstanding special teams plays for Queen's.
Tyler Mullan (Arts & Science), who became Queen's Football's all-time leading scorer in last week's win over the Carleton Ravens, also connected on a 55-yard field goal in the first half, one of three field goals for Mullan on the day. And Queen's had two blocked punts in the win as well.
Alex Vreeken (Kinesiology) had another strong game on offence for Queen's. The nation's leading passer added 342 yards to his season total, while also throwing a touchdown on 22-24 passing against Ottawa.
Logan Walton (Economics) also continued his strong offensive season. Walton led Queen's in receiving with seven receptions for 107 yards and a touchdown in the win.
And it was another strong game on the ground for Queen's, this week led by Jayden Gurzi MacDonald (Economics), who finished with 13 carries for 107 yards and two touchdowns.
Jayce Baldwin (Health Studies) finished with 109 offensive yards with four carries for 42 yards and four receptions for 67 yards.
Baldwin's brother Jacob (Economics) led Queen's Football's defence with a team-high six tackles (four solo, four assisted) while also adding a sack.
Queen's got to Ottawa quarterback Josh Janssen a total of four times in the win, with
Eli Bennett (Engineering),
Oliver Jackson (Film and Media), and
Steven Kpehe (Kinesiology) all also recording sacks in the win.
Queen's Football is on the road next weekend, travelling to London, Ont. to take on the rival Western Mustangs, who also sit at 4-0, on Saturday, Oct. 3 at 1 PM.
