Queen's Football top Laval in pre-season thriller

Queen's Football wasted no time in treating fans at Richardson Stadium to an exciting win with a 29-27 victory over the Laval Rouge et Or Saturday afternoon.

Queen's won the game on a last minute two-point conversion, with quarterback Ashton St. Germain connecting with receiver Benjamin Falkowsky for a 20-yard touchdown, and then following it up with a successful pass for the game-winning two-point conversion with just 10 seconds left.

Matt Driver (Kinesiology) added a rouge on the ensuing kickoff to give Queen's Football the two-point win.

The game was close throughout, with Queen's holding a 3-0 lead after the first quarter and 13-8 lead at half time. The Rouge et Or pulled within one point, 19-18, after the third quarter and held a seven-point lead before Queen's hate heroics.

St. Germain (Arts & Science) finished the game with 224 yards and two touchdowns on 12-15 passing after taking over from Alex Vreeken midway through the game. Vreeken (Kinesiology) finished 7-11 for 128 and a touchdown.

Falkowsky (Life Sciences) led Queen's in receiving with four receptions for 136 yards and two touchdowns.

Brandon Spence (Kinesiology) and Sam Clark (Health Studies) tied for the team lead in tackles, with 5.5 a piece, with Clark adding one sack and two tackles for a loss in the win.

Queen's Football's defensive line got consistent pressure on the Rouge et Or's quarterbacks, with Tom Nitschke (Arts & Science) adding two sacks in the win.

Queen's also had some standout performers on Special Teams, with Driver's crucial rouge toward the end of the game, and Marc Cappuccitti-Gutierrez (Economics and Politics) nailing one punt for a 765-yard rouge.

Queen's will open their 2026 OUA regular season next weekend in Toronto, Ont., visiting the Toronto Varsity Blues on Sunday, Aug. 30 at 7 PM. Fans can catch the game live on OUA.tv.

After a Week 2 bye, Queen's Football will host the Waterloo Warriors in their home opener on Saturday, Sept. 12 at 5 PM at Richardson Stadium. Tickets for the game are on sale now on the Queen's Gaels tickets website.
