GAELS FALL 3-0 TO VARSITY BLUES ON THE ROAD

The Queen's Gaels fell 3-0 to the Toronto Varsity Blues on Friday night on the road. This loss marks the end of a five-game winning streak for the Gaels, however, they will look to seek redemption tomorrow night. Leading the Queen's offense tonight was Nikola Mitrovic (Economics) and Reed Venning (Arts & Science) who each put up 9 kills and 1 service ace. Setter Chris Zimmerman (Arts) orchestrated the offense with 26 assists, as well as picking up a kill and a service ace.

Despite the first set being a tight match, the Gaels appeared to have the slight offensive edge for most of it. However, the Varsity Blues began to generate momentum late in the set, challenging the Queen's lead. A huge block by Zimmerman late in the set kept the score close as the first set went to extra points. The Varsity Blues managed to edge out the Gaels by a slight 27-25 margin to win the first set.

Ben Carr (Arts & Science) was on a roll midway through the second set, getting great height and making five powerful kills in the set that stunned the Toronto defense. Both sides kept the score close, until the Varsity Blues began to tear away with four unanswered points. The Gaels came through with an offensive surge late in the second set, tying the score back up at 23-23. Ultimately, Toronto narrowly came through on top, 25-23, as the Gaels trailed two sets to none.

After falling just short in two sets, Queen's opened the third set with a kill each from Mitrovic and Venning. The teams continued to match each other point for point up to 10-10, when the home team began to distance themselves on the scoreboard. Vaughn Diakow (Science) came into the rotation and made a huge block, thrilling the Queen's bench. Unfortunately, it was not enough, as Toronto won the final set 25-21.

Up next, the Gaels will rematch against the Varsity Blues tomorrow afternoon at 3:30pm on the road. Queen's moves their record to 14-5 and will look to add to their win column tomorrow.
