The Queen's Men's Hockey team are moving on after completing a statement-making first-round sweep of the McGill Redbirds with a thrilling 2–1 overtime victory on Friday night at the Memorial Centre – upsetting the #3 seed in the process.
With a chance to close out the best-of-three series on home ice, the Gaels were met with a tightly contested matchup from the opening puck drop. Both teams skated through a physical and defensively sound first period that saw neither side able to break through, as the game remained scoreless heading into the intermission.
McGill would open the scoring in the middle frame, but the Gaels continued to generate offensive pressure throughout the remainder of the period and into the third. Their persistence paid off at 11:51 of the final frame when Michael Renwick (Arts & Sciences) found the equalizer to bring Queen's back level late in regulation. Renwick finished off a well-executed play set up by Derek Hamilton (Arts & Sciences) and Aidan Castle (Arts & Sciences), injecting life into the home crowd and swinging momentum in favour of the Gaels down the stretch.
With neither side able to find a go-ahead marker before the final horn, the game required overtime — where it didn't take long for Queen's to seize the moment.
Just 2:32 into the extra frame, Kingston, Ontario's own Derek Hamilton delivered the biggest goal of the night, burying the overtime winner off a feed from Sebbie Johnson (Arts & Sciences) and Nolan Hutcheson (Health Studies). The goal not only sealed the 2–1 victory, but secured the series sweep for the Gaels as they eliminated the higher-seeded Redbirds in dramatic fashion.
The win marks Queen's second straight victory in the series following their Game 1 performance and sends them into the next round of postseason play riding momentum after back-to-back strong efforts on both ends of the ice.
Queen's will now shift their focus to the Concordia Stingers as they prepare for their next playoff matchup.
