Gaels Win Five-Set Senior Night Match Over McMaster

The Queen's Gaels men's volleyball team earned a thrilling five-set victory over the McMaster Marauders on Saturday, January 31, in a special Senior Night game at home. The Gaels showed resilience and composure to rally for a 3-2 win, taking the match by set scores of 21-25, 23-25, 25-13, 25-20, and 15-10.

Prior to the match, the Gaels recognized graduating senior Reed Venning (Faculty of Arts & Science), acknowledging his leadership and contributions to the team during Senior Night.

The Marauders took control early, claiming the opening set 21-25. The set featured extended rallies and strong net play, with the Marauders pulling ahead in the final points. The second set followed a similar pattern, remaining tight throughout before the Marauders pulled away in the closing points to secure a 23-25 advantage and take a two-set lead.

However, the Gaels set the tone early in the third set, building momentum through aggressive serving and strong blocking. Nikola Mitrovic (Economics), Ben Carr (Faculty of Arts & Science), and Chris Zimmerman (Arts) played key roles at the net, helping the Gaels dominate the set and earn a 25-13 win.

In the fourth set, the Gaels continued to apply pressure. Reed Venning (Faculty of Arts & Science) delivered in crucial moments, finishing key points to maintain the Gaels' edge. Solid defensive coverage and consistent offence allowed the Gaels to close out the set 25-20.

The Gaels carried their momentum into the final set, jumping out to an early lead and staying composed under pressure. Venning once again came up big in the closing moment, sealing the match with a kill to secure the 15-10 victory and complete the comeback.

The Gaels will look to build on the win when they play against the Toronto Varsity Blues on Friday, February 6th!
