Queen’s Gaels Outscore Gryphons 94–72 in Second-Half Surge

Queen's Men's Basketball is back at the ARC this weekend for a back-to-back series, starting with a Friday night showdown against the Guelph Gryphons. The Gaels are looking to keep their momentum at home, using aggressive offense and tight defensive rotations to stay competitive in the OUA.

Queen's got off to a slow start in the first quarter, falling behind as Guelph came out firing. Both teams traded baskets, but the Gryphons' early execution and high-energy transition play gave them the edge heading into the second quarter.

The second quarter saw Queen's continue to struggle finding their rhythm on both ends of the court. Guelph's ball movement and shot selection kept the Gaels on their heels, sending the teams into halftime with the visitors holding a 47–35 lead.

Coming out of the locker room, Queen's flipped the script. The Gaels came out aggressive in transition and executed crisp half-court sets, dominating the third and fourth quarters. Improved ball movement, perimeter shooting, and stifling defense fueled their comeback, allowing Queen's to erase the first-half deficit and take control of the game.

Queen's capped off the rally with a 94–72 win over Guelph. Ollie Engen (Kinesiology) led the charge with 22 points, nine rebounds, and five assists, while Lucas Ponting (Commerce) knocked down 20 points, including three triples. Ashton Bain (Arts) added 12 points, helping the Gaels secure a decisive victory after halftime adjustments. The team's balanced scoring and lockdown defense highlighted Queen's resilience, depth, and ability to execute under pressure, making for an exciting finish to a hard-fought contest.

Queen's Men's Basketball returns to action tomorrow evening, facing the York Lions at 6:00 p.m. in the ARC Main Gym. Come out and support your Gaels as they aim for a weekend sweep! Free student tickets are available at gogaelsgo.com.
