The Queen's Gaels Women's hockey battled to a hard-fought 3-2 victory on the road in Windsor, Ont., securing an important win as they push toward the playoffs.
After falling behind early against the Windsor Lancers, the Gaels responded with goals from
Alyson Reeves (Commerce) and
Kelsey Dunn (Kinesiology) who fired home the go-ahead goal to clinch a 3-2 victory Saturday evening.
Windsor opened the scoring early in the first period, as Maggi DeWolf-Russ capitalized on a long-range opportunity, firing a one-timer that found its way past the Gaels netminder,
Emma Tennant (Mechanical Engineering) at 3:01.
Despite being outshot 16-7 by the Lancers, the Gaels capitalized on their opportunity as
Taya Leonard threaded a perfect pass to
Logan Biggs who made no mistake burying the equalizer at 10:11, levelling the game at one apiece.
Just two minutes into the second period, Darcee Hall pounced on a deflected puck off Tennant's stick, lifting it past Tennant to restore Windsor's lead at 2-1.
Reeves got just enough of a touch on the puck to redirect it home after a perfect setup from
Sarah Campbell (Law), netting her 11th goal of the campaign and bringing the Gaels even once again at 2-2.
Just over a minute after Reeves' goal, a costly miscue by Lancers netminder Cadence Petitclerc left the puck up for grabs. Dunn wasted no time capitalizing on the error, snapping the puck into the back of the net to give the Gaels a 3-2 edge, their first of the game. That goal would stand as the score at the second intermission.
In the third period, the Gaels dug in their heels, fending off a determined Lancers attack. Despite some close calls, the Gaels held strong and sealed the 3-2 victory.
Following this victory, the Gaels are gearing up for the playoffs, with their upcoming OUA Play-In Game set for this weekend, where they'll face off against the TMU Bold. Details on game time are to be announced.
