The Queen's Gaels fell 86-76 the Laurentian Voyageurs on Friday evening on the road. Lucas Ponting (Commerce) led the attack with 23 points which included 4 three-pointers and 3 free throws, as well as leading in rebounds with 6. Alongside their teammate was Ashton Bain (Arts) with 20 points, including 2 three-pointers and 2 free throws.
In the first quarter, Bain and Ponting both made three-pointers for the Gaels. The teams remained closely matched, with Queen's tying up the score at 18-18 after Pointing's three with six seconds remaining.
The Gaels remained consistent, putting up two more three-pointers in the second quarter. Pointing made their second three of the game while Tyson Lama (Commerce) put up their first. Kai Dalen (Arts) made a huge dunk with one-minute remaining in the quarter, thrilling the Queen's bench. Both teams put up another 18 points in the second half, proving to be evenly matched as they entered halftime 36-36.
The third quarter came with a thrilling start, with four back-to-back threes between the two teams; Queen's with one by Jakub Dobiech (Arts), and Laurentian with three. Later in the quarter, Bain made another three-pointer, narrowing the Voyageur lead to 50-47. Ponting made another three-pointer late in the third, however, Laurentian held a 59-52 lead going into the fourth.
Pointing was impressive and consistent on the three-point line, making their fourth three-pointer of the game at the start of the final quarter. Intensity was high as the Voyageurs held a seven-point lead, 77-70, with two minutes left to play. Coming off a Queen's timeout, Bain made two layups, but it was not enough to overturn the home team's lead as the Gaels fell 86-76.
Up next, the Gaels will travel to the Nipissing Lakers tomorrow to face off against them at 6pm. Their record stands at 1-5 as the team will look to find their second win of the season tomorrow.
