Gaels come away with a gritty win over Carleton

The Queen's Gaels women's hockey team earned a crucial 2-1 victory over the Carleton Ravens on Friday night at the Ice House. A late second-period shorthanded goal from Alyson Reeves (Commerce) proved to be the game-winner, while Emma Tennant (Mechanical Engineering) delivered a stellar performance in net, turning aside 27 shots to preserve the win.

The Gaels struck first late in the opening period when Kelsey Dunn (Kinesiology) buried a loose puck in front, capitalizing on a setup from Sophy Aldred (Life Sciences). Queen's carried the 1-0 lead into intermission, outshooting Carleton 16-6 in the opening frame.

Carleton responded midway through the second period, as Hayden Serniuk found the back of the net to even the score. With momentum shifting, Queen's was forced onto the penalty kill late in the frame. However, Reeves delivered in a crucial moment, intercepting a pass at the blue line and breaking in alone before beating the Carleton goaltender with a wrist shot to restore the lead.

The third period saw a defensive clinic from Queen's, limiting Carleton to just 10 shots while Tennant stood tall between the pipes. The Gaels' penalty kill was put to the test once again after a late penalty but held firm, shutting down the Ravens' attack to seal the victory.

With the win, Queen's moves to 8-10-2-2 on the season. The Gaels now turn their attention to a pivotal matchup at home against the Ottawa Gee-Gees next Friday at the Memorial Centre, with playoff hopes on the line. Puck drop is slated for 7:30 p.m.
