Crosstown rivals, the RMC Paladins and the Queen's Gaels, met up Friday evening in their second face off of the season. Queen's Men's Hockey emerged with a 5-2 victory.
Queens' offense ran smoothly throughout the match—they accrued 35 shots on net.
The Gael's lit up the scoreboard at the five-minute mark, capitalizing on a neutral zone turnover. Daniel Michaud (Arts & Science) quickly turned the possession into a goal, assisted by Hayden Fowler (Health Studies).
Three minutes later, during a Queen's power play, Michael Renwick (Arts & Science) found another after stepping through the RMC defense. With the goal, Ethan Larmand (Arts & Science) picked up assist.
Queen's opened up the second with another goal. The Gaels battled for the puck in front of the RMC net before Nolan Hutcheson (Health Studies) gained possession, and Sam Marburg (Arts & Science) found the back of the net.
While the Gaels had many other offensive opportunities in the second, none of them made it past the RMC goalie.
Holden Katzalay (Computing) added another power play goal for the Gaels five minutes into the third period, assisted by Owen Lalonde (Geography/French). This is Katzalay's fifth goal of the season.
RMC fired back a minute later with their first goal of the match, bringing the score to 4-1.
Not to be outdone, Marburg added a second goal a minute later, assisted by Hutcheson.
RMC closed out the match with the final goal, deep in the third, surrendering the win to the Gaels.
With the victory, the Gaels' record on the season improves to 17-5. They remain ranked second in the OUA East.
Queen's Men's Hockey will take on the RMC Paladins in hockey's oldest rivalry, the Carr-Harris Cup, on Feb. 7, at 7:30pm, at the Slush Puppy Place. Tickets are available on the Queen's ticket website.
