Queen's Women's Soccer Shutout Laurentian Voyageurs in 6-0 Victory

(29/09/24) - Sudbury, ON.  The Queen's Women's soccer team brought the heat on Sunday afternoon's match against the Laurentian Voyageurs, leaving Sudbury with a glorious 6-0 shutout secured along with an addition to their four game win streak.

The girls played a powerful and strategic match, and were quick to eliminate any possible offensive opportunities for the Voyageurs, only allowing one shot attempt in additional minutes of the game.

The match began with an exciting first half with five goals scored and 13 shots on goal attempts for the Gaels, keeping pressure consistently on the Voyageurs side of the field.  The first goal was scored within the first 10 minutes (7:59) on the turf by midfielder, no. 12 Lily Goss (Kinesiology), assisted by forward, no. 11 Mattson Strickler (Con-Ed).  Three minutes later, forward, no. 21 Morgan Fenton (Philosophy) finds the back of the Voyageurs net making the score 2-0.

The first half is concluded with three more goals: first by midfielder, no. 9 Marissa Gravel (Life Sciences), assisted by fullback, no. 16 Cassia Crozier (Kinesiology) at 34:49.  Then two minutes later, a header by midfielder, no. 8 Seema Sakran (Kinesiology) (assist by fullback no. 10 Tatiana Kayrouz (Commerce)) finds its way out of reach of the Voyageurs goalie to score.  The first half closes with a final goal at 41:11 by Strickler, assisted by Sakran.

The Gaels without-a-doubt dominated the Voyageurs in the first half, situating themselves in quite the comfortable lead of 5-0 going into the second half of the match.  Defense kept control of the ball, fencing out the opponent from any goal chances, and the offense responded by keeping the scoreboard busy.

The second half saw one more goal by forward, no. 18 Brinley Bjornson (Arts) at 51:51, and 10 more shots on goal.  Meanwhile, the Gaels only allowed for one shot by the Voyageurs to get close to the Gaels's goalpost - the first and last of the match.

The Gaels walk away with a 6-0 shutout against the Voyageurs, and advance their OUA record to 6-1-1, maintaining their third place seat in the OUA East Women's Soccer standings.

This win propels the Gaels momentum and confidence towards playoff season, and their next game on Saturday, October 5th, 1:00 PM, against the TMU Bold at their home field of Richardson Stadium in Kingston, ON., where they will look to continue their winning streak.
