(05/10/24) - Kingston, ON. The Queen's Women's Soccer team absolutely dominated the TMU Bold on home field of Richardson Stadium in a shutout of 7-0 on Saturday afternoon. Wearing their pink in support of breast cancer research, the "Kick for the Cure" match adds another win to the Gaels' five game streak, which have all been shutout games. The Gaels prove to be an intimidating team against OUA competition, only allowing two goals all regular season.
Queen's Women's Soccer has set the goal of raising $15,000 for the Canadian Cancer Society this year and donations can be made on their fundraising page.
The Gaels put on a spectacle of a match scoring seven goals while dominating defensively, only allowing the Bold two shots all game and zero shots on goal. The Gaels opened the match with a goal in the fourth minute of the game, scored by forward, no. 11,
Mattson Strickler (Con-Ed), assisted by midfielder, no. 8,
Seema Sakran (Kinesiology).
From the opening minutes of the game, the Gaels held position in Bold territory, closing in on the net, which allowed the ball to sneak past Bold goalkeeper Elisa Paolucci to add to their lead two minutes later, making the score 2-0.
With Gaels defense locking in on any offensive attempt by the Bold - clearing the ball from their own territory, the girls' powerful presence gave them multiple opportunities on net throughout the first half. The third and fourth goals of the game are scored at 20:17 by defender, no. 5,
Clare Sun (Health Sciences), then a minute later by Sakran, making the score a confident 4-0 going into the second half. The Bold have still yet to make any offensive advances on Gaels goalie
Kirstin Tynan (Political and Health Studies). Not only did the Gaels keep opposing offense at bay, they also won every header in the first half, marking themselves as fierce competitors against the hesitant Bold.
Going into the second half, the Gaels continued to make plays possible for themselves while impossible for the Bold. The next goal of the match is scored by Sakrin at 65:19, marking her second addition to the scoreboard for the match, assisted by forward
Brinley Bjornson (Arts). Maintaining attack on Bold players and closing space between themselves and the net, another goal is awarded to the Gaels, making the score 6-0.
In the last 10 minutes of the match, Bjornson scores the final goal, finishing the game with a 7-0 victory over the Bold. The Gaels made their presence known with a total of 19 shot attempts throughout the game.
Special shout-out to goes to third year
Seema Sakran for scoring two goals and an assist during the match, proving to be a dominant offensive presence on the field throughout the match. With this game in the rear-view, Sakran strengthens her record to four goals and five assists for the season.
With this victory, the Gaels season record becomes 7-1-1, and are second on OUA East standings. The Gaels will return to Richardson Stadium the following day, Sunday, October 6th at 1:00PM, to play against the Nipissing Lakers, who currently hold the record of 7-2. Momentum and confidence gained from the past five games should aid the Gaels going forward in their season towards a spot in the playoffs, and hopefully another win at Sundays match.
