Toronto, ON — The Queen's Gaels Women's Hockey Team delivered an impressive performance Saturday, overpowering the TMU Bold 6-1. A well-rounded offensive effort and solid goaltending propelled Queen's to its second win of the season, snapping a recent losing streak in emphatic fashion.
The Gaels struck early in the first period when
Logan Biggs (Kinesiology) deflected a hard shot from the point on a power play, giving Queen's the lead just nine minutes into the game. Assisted by
Mikayla Cranney (Arts & Science) and
Charlotte Melindy, Biggs showcased the Gaels' commitment to seizing early momentum.
Rookie forward
Megan Hirschfeld (Arts & Science) extended the lead with her first OUA goal early in the second, capitalizing on a setup from Biggs and Cranney. Less than six minutes later,
Sophie Hudson (Applied Science) found the net on a slick feed from
Kelsey Dunn (Kinesiology) and
Alyson Reeves (Commerce), pushing Queen's lead to 3-0.
TMU's struggles continued as Queen's maintained relentless pressure.
Sarah Campbell (Commerce) netted another goal late in the second, with Hirschfeld recording an assist on the play. Reeves added to the Gaels' lead shortly after, scoring her third goal of the season with an assist from
Taylor Eastwood (Psychology).
The Gaels capped off the second period on a high note, with Dunn finding the net on a last-second power-play goal, assisted by Hudson and Cranney, sending Queen's into the final frame with a commanding 6-0 advantage.
TMU managed to break through late in the third, as Dayle Chinnick scored on a power play, yet Queen's goaltender
Emma Tennant (Mechanical Engineering) remained steady, stopping 23 of 24 shots and boasting a .958 save percentage.
With this comprehensive 6-1 victory, Queen's displayed growth on both ends of the ice, particularly in the power play and penalty kill, holding TMU to just one goal on six power-play opportunities. Emerging contributions from players like Biggs, Hirschfeld, and Campbell signal a promising shift for the Gaels as they aim to build momentum in the season.
The Gaels, now 2-7, return to home ice next week to face the University of Toronto Varsity Blues at Memorial Centre November 15th at 7:30pm.
