KINGSTON (Nov. 22, 2024) – Queen's Women's Basketball extended its winning streak to five games with a dominant 70-31 victory over the Toronto Varsity Blues at the ARC. The Gaels' defensive intensity and transition play set the tone, stifling the Varsity Blues offense while capitalizing on turnovers to control the game from start to finish.
Queen's opened the game with a relentless approach on the offensive glass and fast breaks, jumping to a commanding 23-8 lead by the end of the first quarter.
Mikayla McFarlane (Kinesiology) led the charge in the paint, finishing the game with nine points and seven rebounds, helping Queen's secure 28 points in the paint and 12 second-chance points.
The Gaels' defensive prowess was evident throughout, holding the Varsity Blues to 22.4% shooting from the field and forcing 31 turnovers, which resulted in 43 points.
Brooke Hussey (Kinesiology) provided a spark off the bench, scoring a game-high 16 points on 5-for-13 shooting, while adding four rebounds and four assists.
Despite a slow start to the second half, where Toronto opened on a 7-0 run, Queen's quickly regained control and ended the third quarter with a 61-29 lead. The fourth quarter saw minimal offensive production from both sides, but Queen's smothering defense allowed only two points in the final frame to seal the victory.
Other key contributors for the Gaels included
Amy Hagman (Kinesiology), who tallied 12 points on 3-for-6 shooting, including two three-pointers, and
Katrina Renon (Arts & Science), who grabbed a team-high 12 rebounds to go along with seven points.
Queen's outshot Toronto from beyond the arc, converting eight of 25 attempts compared to Toronto's three of 15. The Gaels also dominated the boards with a 39-30 rebounding edge, including 16 offensive rebounds.
The Gaels, now 5-2 on the season, will look to continue their strong play when they return to the court tomorrow at the ARC to host the Lakehead Thunderwolves at 4 p.m.
