Queen's Women's Basketball defeat Ottawa in Shoot for the Cure Game

KINGSTON, Ont. (Feb.5, 2023) - Queen's Women's Basketball defeated the Ottawa Gee-Gees 59-52 in a close match Sunday afternoon at the Athletics and Recreation Centre. The win came in the Gaels' annual Shoot for the Cure Game. To learn more and to donate, check out the team's donation page.

Both the Gaels and the Gee-Gees came to play. The score was close in the first quarter, with Queen's in the lead until Ottawa managed to tie the score 15-15 in the last couple of minutes. The Gaels responded with a strong offensive play that included a basket from Michelle Istead, putting Queen's in a two-point lead. Ottawa was unable to get through the Gaels' solid defense and Queen's led 17-15 going into the second quarter.

The second quarter was all uphill for Queen's. The Gaels were on a scoring streak, building their lead to 11 points before a time-out was called by Ottawa. Heading into the second half, Queen's led Ottawa 39-22. The Gaels kept up their momentum in the third quarter, outscoring the Gee-Gees 54-38. Ottawa showed much more on the offensive end of the court in the fourth quarter, but Queen's still came out ahead to win the game 59-52.

Laura Donovan topped the stats board with 16 points, while Julia Chadwick was not too far behind with 15 points and seven rebounds.

With the win, the Gaels improved their record to 17-1.

After the game, Laura Donovan touched on what the team has learned from the tough loss against Carleton that broke their undefeated streak. "We now know how it feels to face adversity," said Donovan. "It's better it happened when it did, rather than later in the season." She also added that while the win tonight was great, the job isn't done yet.

The Gaels are back at the ARC Friday, February 10th at 6:00 p.m. as they take on the Lakehead Thunderwolves.
