Queen's Football fell to the Western Mustangs 47-20 in their OUA semifinals matchup on Saturday, Nov. 4, in London, Ont, eliminating Queen's from the OUA playoffs.
Earlier this season, Queen's challenged Western in Kingston, Ont. and suffered a 32-27 loss. In a closely contested battle, Queen's fell behind during the second half, echoing the storyline of their most recent battle against the Mustangs.
Alex Vreeken, (Kingston, Ont.), returned to the field for the first time since September, to help lead the offence.
In the first quarter, Western gained momentum by nailing a field goal from the 16-yard line, giving them an early three-point lead. However,
Josh McBain (Mississauga, Ont.) was able to pull off an incredible pick-six, making an 86-yard journey and escaping a shoelace tackle at the end zone for Queen's first touchdown. \
Western responded moments later, returning the ensuing kickoff 97 yards to the end zone. Two back-to-back highlight-reel plays from both teams put the score at 10-7, with Western holding a narrow lead.
During the second quarter, Mullan had a successful field goal that tied the game. Vreeken connected with
Aidan O'Neal for a 31-yard offensive drive that paved the way for
Jared Chisari to score a touchdown and give Queen's a 17-10 lead. Queen's lead was short-lived, as the Mustangs orchestrated a 46-yard drive that carried them into the red zone, setting them up for a touchdown that evened the score. Queen's would later concede a safety, giving Western a narrow 19-17 lead heading into the second half.
The third quarter initially looked promising for Queen's, as Queen's offence moved the ball well, but couldn't capitalize. The Mustangs would score next, increasing their lead to 26-17 and after a penalty on the kickoff pushed Queen's back to their own 1-yard line, the Mustangs would hold and later add a field goal, adding three more points to their score.
Western would add another field goal before
Tyler Mullan (North Bay, Ont.) connected on a 38-yard field goal, his second of the game, that narrowed the gap in the score. Western added two more touchdowns to close out the win and advance to the Yates Cup.
Vreeken (Kingston, Ont.) had an impressive first half of the game and finished off at 21-40 for 263 yards.
Jared Chisari (Naples, ME) added to his spectacular 2023 season with 61 yards and a touchdown in the semifinals loss.
