KINGSTON, Ont. (Oct. 5, 2023) - Queen's Women's Soccer defeated their crosstown rivals, the RMC Paladins, 7-0 Thursday afternoon at Richardson Stadium.
The win came on the Gaels' annual Kick for the Cure Game. The team has beenÂ
raising awareness and money for breast cancer research ahead of the game and wore pink socks for the game.Â
Thursday's game was also a School Day Game for the Gaels, with 1,500+ Kingston area students in attendance, cheering the Gaels on in the win.
Mattson Strickler (Ottawa, Ont.) and
Seema Sakran (Ottawa, Ont.) led the Gaels with two goals each in the win. Strickler opened the scoring for Queen's in the 14th minute on a goal assisted by
Lily Goss (Kingston, Ont.), and added another in the 29th minute.
Sakran, who scored in the 17th and 35th minute, is now tied for the lead in goals on Queen's with seven on the season.
Leda Naihin (Markham, Ont.) also has nine goals on the season after finding the back of the net in the 23rd minute.
Sakran and
Leda Naihin are tied for fifth in the OUA in scoring through nine games this season.
Marissa Gravel (Ottawa, Ont.) and
Melina Glavas (Vancouver, B.C.) added second half goals for the Gaels, with Glavas assisting on Gravel's 56th minute goal before finding the back of the net in the 76th minute, to seal Queen's 7-0 win.
Kirstin Tynan (North Vancouver, B.C.) and
Ashley Strand (North Vancouver, B.C.) combined for the clean sheet in goal for Queen's.
With the win, Queen's improved their record to 8-0-1 on the season. The Gaels sit atop the OUA East Division standings with 25 points.
Queen's Women's Soccer returns to the field next weekend, when they host the Trent Excalibur on Saturday, Oct. 14 at 1 p.m. at Richardson Stadium.
