Two late goals lead Gaels past Trent Excalibur for fifth straight win

KINGSTON, Ont. (Oct. 14, 2023) - Trailing 2-1 with less than 10 minutes to play, Queen's Men's Soccer found the back of the net twice late in the game to edge the Trent Excalibur 3-2 Saturday afternoon at Richardson Stadium, extending their winning streak to five games.

Pablo Hempelmann-Perez (Toronto, Ont.) opened the scoring for the Gaels in the fourth minute, but Trent would score in the 33rd and 40th minute to take a one-goal lead into half time.

The Gaels couldn't break through until the 82nd minute, when Lucas Booth (North Vancouver, B.C.) found the back of the net for Queen's on a goal assisted by Diadie Traore (Toronto, Ont.) to even the score 2-2.

Hempelmann-Perez with his second of the game four minutes later proved to be the winner as Queen's held on for the 3-2 win.

With the two goals, Hempelmann-Perez is now tied with teammate Matthew Ciavarro for third in the OUA with nine goals on the season.

Queen's out-shot Trent 16-11, with nine shots on goal compared to three for the Excalibur. Connor Adams (Richmond, B.C.) earned the win for Queen's in goal.

With the victory, the Gaels improved their record to 5-3-2 and sit fourth in the OUA East Division standings with 17 points.

Queen's will close out their regular season next weekend on the road, taking on the Laurentian Voyageurs on Saturday, Oct. 21 and the Nipissing Lakers on Sunday, Oct. 22.
