Watkins-Southward scores OT winner, Gaels edge Ontario Tech in McHaffie's debut

Scout Watkins-Southward found the loose puck after a scramble in front of the net and buried it in the back of the net 41 seconds into overtime to give Queen's Women's Hockey a 4-3 win over the Ontario Tech Ridgebacks in their season opener Saturday night in Oshawa, Ont.

With the win, the Gaels started the season 1-0 and were victorious in new Head Coach Morgan McHaffie's debut behind the bench.

Queen's led 2-0 and 3-2 in the game, with the Ridgebacks fighting back both times until Watkins-Southward (Kingston, Ont.) sent the Gaels home victorious in overtime.

Mikayla Cranney (Aurora, Ont.) and Sam Wood (Kingston, Ont.) both scored for Queen's in the first period to give the Gaels an early two-goal lead.

The Ridgebacks cut Queen's lead in half with a late first period goal on the power play and would even the score midway through the second period with another power play marker.

Taylor Eastwood (Ottawa, Ont.) restored Queen's lead late in the second period on a goal assisted by Sophie Hudson (Maple, Ont.) and Kennedy MacAlpine (Newmarket, Ont.).

Ontario Tech evened the score again midway through the third period ahead of Watkins-Southward's overtime winner.

The Gaels outshot the Ridgebacks 37-22 with Emma Tennant (Pointe Claire, Que.) recording 19 saves for the win.

Queen's returns to the ice next weekend for their home opener, hosting the Waterloo Warriors Friday, Oct. 20 and Laurier Golden Hawks Saturday, Oct. 21, with both games at the Memorial Centre.
