Queen's Men's Hockey topped the Nipissing Lakers 4-3 in a shootout Saturday afternoon in North Bay, Ont. to sweep their weekend series with the Lakers.
After a 4-2 win Friday night, the Gaels and Lakers battled to a shootout where Queen's ultimately secured the win.
Holden Katzalay scored the lone shootout goal in the third round and
Luke Richardson turned away all three Nipissing shooters for the win. Richardson added 32 stops in regulation and overtime for the Gaels.
Queen's never led in the game until Katzalay's shootout winner, playing catch-up all game long. After Nipissing opened the scoring midway through the first period,
Josh Curtis found the back of the net for the equalizer six minutes later, with assists going to Katzalay and
Owen Lalonde.
Nipissing would retake the lead late in the frame before
Jonathan Yantsis tied the game again for Queen's, with Curtis and
Hayden Fowler recording assists on his second period goal.
The Lakers would respond again late in the second period but the Gaels would ensure the game was deadlocked heading into the final frame when
Dalton Duhart scored with eight seconds left in the period, assists going to Yantsis and Lalonde.
The third period and overtime were scoreless.
With the win, Queen's improved their record to 7-9-2 on the season. The Gaels return to the ice for a mid-week tilt with the Carleton Ravens, Wednesday, Jan. 11 at 7:30 p.m. at the Memorial Centre.
