Michael Kelvin and
Cole Syllas tied for a game-high 17 points in helping Queen's Men's Basketball defeat the Ottawa Gee-Gees 76-62 Sunday night in a battle of the two top teams in the OUA standings in Ottawa, Ont.
Both Kelvin and Syllas also recorded double-doubles in the big win, with Kelvin grabbing a game-high 12 rebounds and Syllas adding 10.
Cam Bett also scored in double digits for the Gaels in the win, recording 12 points.
The Gee-Gees led Queen's early, and held a four-point lead after the first quarter. A big second quarter helped propell the Gaels to victory, with Queen's outscoring Ottawa by 16 points in the quarter to take a 12-point half time lead. The second half was back-and-forth with the Gaels holding on for the big win.
Queen's dominated the Gee-Gees downlow, outscoring them 32-10 in the paint. The Gaels also outshot Ottawa, shooting 42 per cent from the floor and 24 per cent from three-point range while holding their opponents to 28 per cent from the floor and 20 per cent from three-point range.
With the win, the Gaels remain atop the OUA East Division standings with their record improving to 14-2. The Gee-Gees' record fell to 14-3 with the loss.
The Gaels have two games next weekend, starting on the road taking on the Guelph Gryphons on Friday, Feb. 3 in Guelph, Ont before hosting the Gee-Gees on Sunday, Feb. 5 at 3 p.m. at the Athletics and Recreation Centre (ARC).
