Queen's Women's Rugby opens season with big win on the road against York

Queen's Women's Rugby got off to a winning start to their national title defence season with a 105-0 win over the York Lions Saturday afternoon in Toronto, Ont.

2019 OUA and U SPORTS Rookie of the Year and All-Canadian Back Rower Lizzie Gibson (Caledon, Ont.) led the way for the Gaels with three tries and 10 converts. It was Gibson's first regular season action for Queen's since the 2019 season.

Siobhan Sheerin (Toronto, Ont.) added three tries while Maggie Banks (Coquitlam, B.C.) and Rachel Cullum (Ottawa, Ont.) finished with two tries each. Madison Donnelly, Jaden Walker (Oakville, Ont.), Grace Anderson (Montreal, Que.), Ally Rupar (Ottawa, Ont.), Tattyannah Jackson (Newmarket, Ont.), Mika Matsukobu (Ottwa, Ont.), and Maddy Kushner (Ottawa, Ont.) all added one try each in the win.

The 105-point win is Queen's biggest since beating the Western Mustangs 135-0 to start the 2019 season and the first time they have held an opponent scoreless since their 50-0 win over the Brock Badgers in the season opener last year.

With the win, the Gaels open the 2022 season 1-0 while the York Lions start the year 0-1. Queen's will return to the pitch next weekend, Saturday, Sept. 10 at 3 p.m., taking on Brock in their home opener at Nixon Field.
