KINGSTON, Ont. (Nov. 3, 2022) - Lizzie Gibson added another honour to her incredible 2022 season, being named the U SPORTS Women's Rugby Player of the Year at the U SPORTS Women's Rugby Awards banquet Thursday.
Gibson's U SPORTS honour comes after being named the OUA Women's Rugby Player of the Year by the conference last week.
The 2019 OUA and U SPORTS Women's Rugby Rookie of the Year, Gibson (Caledon, Ont.) returned for her second season this year and led the country in scoring with 176 points in the regular season (14 tries, 53 conversions). Gibson now sits second on Queen's Women's Rugby's All-Time Scoring list with 218 career regular season points, just one behindÂ
Lauren McEwen's 219 points. Last season's U SPORTS Women's Rugby Player of the YearÂ
Sophie de Goede, who is currently captaining Team Canada at the Women's Rugby World Cup, is third on the list with 208 points.
Gibson was also named a U SPORTS First Team All Canadian Thursday, joining teammates
Mya Brubacher and
Carmen Izyk as First Team All Canadians.
Magali Harvey and
Maggie Banks were named Second Team All Canadians for the 2022 season.
