KINGSTON, Ont. (Oct. 27, 2022) - Lizzie Gibson was named the OUA Women's Rugby Player of the Year for the 2022 season by the conference on Thursday. 

Gibson was one of two major award winners for Queen's in OUA Women's Rugby this season, with Maddy Donnelly also being named the OUA Women's Rugby Rookie of the Year.

The 2019 OUA and U SPORTS Women's Rugby Rookie of the Year, Gibson (Caledon, Ont.) returned for her second season this year and led the country in scoring with 176 points in the regular season (14 tries, 53 conversions). Gibson now sits second on Queen's Women's Rugby's All-Time Scoring list with 218 career regular season points, just one behind Lauren McEwen's 219 points. Last season's U SPORTS Women's Rugby Player of the Year Sophie de Goede, who is currently captaining Team Canada at the Women's Rugby World Cup, is third on the list with 208 points.

Gibson was also one of five Gaels players to be named an OUA First Team All-Star, along with Maddy Kushner, Magali Harvey, Mya Brubacher, Maggie Banks, and Carmen Izyk. Jill Lynott was named an OUA Second Team All-Star.

Donnelly (Little Britain, Ont.) finished tied for second on the Gaels in scoring and tied for sixth in the OUA with 45 points on the season (nine tries). 

Gibson and Donnelly helped Queen's to an undefeated 6-0 regular season where they outscored their opponents by a combined score of 488-21.

The Gaels defeated the Western Mustangs 90-0 in the OUA semifinals last weekend and will host the Guelph Gryphons Friday at 7 p.m. at Nixon Field in the OUA Championship Game.
