Queen's Women's Hockey lost their OUA regular season opener to the Western Mustangs, 3-1 Friday night in London, Ont.

Rebecca Thompson (Kingston, Ont.) scored the Gaels lone goal in the loss, scoring late in the third period, assisted by Sophie Hudson (Maple, Ont.), to break up the shutout for Western.

After a scoreless first period, the Mustangs opened the scoring late in the second period when Jenna MacLean found the back of the net.

Western took a one-goal lead into the third period before adding two more goals, both by Elizabeth Gauthier, to take a three-goal lead late into the period.

Thompson's first of the season for Queen's cut the Mustangs' lead to two and that would be how it ended.

Lexi Giorgi (Stouffville, Ont.) got the start in net for the Gaels, finishing the game with 39 saves. Queen's managed 32 shots on Western goalie Kaitlyn Booth.

The loss dropped Queen's record to 0-1 to start the season. The Gaels continue their road trip Saturday, Oct. 22, taking on the Windsor Lancers at 7:30 p.m.
